Editorial Portraits (2021 Recap)

I really enjoy working with publications and getting to meet and photograph so many interesting people. In 2021, I had the opportunity to capture around 30 different editorial portraits for Virginia Business Magazine, based in Richmond. Many times, I only get about 15-30 minutes with each subject and that time must include location scouting, equipment set up and capture. So, thinking on my feet is a must! I never know what the environment of the location will be like until I arrive and sometimes finding a time that works for my subject's schedule means shooting at (not ideal) high noon outdoors! However, I love the challenge that shooting these quick on-location portraits brings and getting to hear a little bit of each person's story along the way.

Angelic Jenkins, owner of Angelic’s Kitchen in Charlottesville, VA.

George Hodson, CEO of Veritas Vineyard photographed for a story about how, despite the pandemic, he opened up a popup restaurant at the vineyard.

Charis Jones, owner of Sassy Jones, a Richmond, VA based women's boutique was photographed for Virginia Business's cover story about Black business leaders and entrepreneurs in Virginia.

Alexandra Cunningham, a partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth law firm was photographed for Virginia Business's law feature.

Andrea Saathoff, a Charlottesville based small business owner (Ace Auto Center Express) who pivoted and expanded into other services during the pandemic.

Ashley Apple, a family nurse practitioner at KidMed in Richmond, VA and commissioner on government relations for the Virginia Nurses Association. Ashley spoke in the story about feeling troubled as she hears from colleagues choosing to leave their hospital jobs because of the stress of the pandemic.
